Why you should detox your body regularly

Just as cleaning your body’s exterior has many benefits, cleansing and detoxifying the body on a consistent basis offers many health benefits. Not only are we living in an area with plenty of pollutants, students are spending most of their time sitting in chairs– at school, during mealtime, in cars, etc. The buildup of toxic and/or harmful residue in your body accumulates with these prolonged inactivities. Teens might be obsessed with weight loss and achieving the slimmer figure by, for example, cutting down on junk food, but more importantly, toxins and indigestible build-up in a growing body cannot be left unresolved. Detoxification of the body and flushing out harmful substances is an important daily habit.

Detoxification is cleaning the blood of impurities from the blood in the liver, where toxins are processed for elimination. The body also eliminates toxins through the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymph, and skin. Detoxification of the body has many long-term effects including: the removal of waste/debris and chemicals from the colon, the improvement of the digestion, recovery in intestinal system, energy levels increased, advancement in nutrient absorption, etc.

For teenagers, growing bodies need to be under special care as the body system is still underdeveloped. The following are simple ways to flush out all the poison buildup:

1. Eat fruits with plenty of antioxidants.

Long-term exposure to toxins (environmental pollutants, cancer-causing chemicals, preservatives, pesticides, heavy metals, industrial waste, etc) affects our metabolism, behavior, immune system, and leads to diseases. The toxins are stored in tissues and cells throughout the body, including the brain, often for years.

Some super-foods include: pomegranates, grapes, lemons, and apples. (Anything citrus; they have the highest detoxifying power)

2. Drink enough water

Have you been getting your 8 cups a day? Water helps maintain your body’s fluid levels, which helps your kidneys flush out the body’s main toxin, blood urea nitrogen.

3. Take a Vitamin C supplement or fruits with plenty of it

Vitamin C helps the body produce glutathione, a liver compound that drives away toxins.

4. Exercise or sweat a lot to eliminate waste through perspiration

Yoga instructor and fitness expert Shirley Archer, an author and spokeswoman for the American Council on Exercise (ACE), said the theory behind the effectiveness of detoxifying twists in yoga is that they squeeze the organs, which push the blood out so fresh blood can rush in.

Also, sweating helps dispel some of the heavy metals absorbed by the skin in a daily environment. Deep sweating detoxifies through the sweating process by reducing levels of lead, copper, zinc, nickel, mercury, and chemical toxins commonly absorbed from every-day environments. Ninety-nine percent of what is left on the surface of your skin after sweating is water. The other one percent is an unnecessary and undesirable waste.
